First Day off in San Francisco

It was 30th October 2010 the day before Halloween, People at Meltwater had come in costumes to work to celebrate Halloween. It was amazing to see all different costumes. When Usha and Myself arrived at office, we were given a day off. After 3 Straight Weeks of working hard without break we finally had a chance to go out and see the beautiful San Francisco.

Even though i did not know that there was a Halloween party at Meltwater, I wore a sweater which looked like Zebra. This is where i used to sit when i was working at San Francisco.

Now that we got a day off we didn't know what we wanted to see, So we went to ask Phil Chart the office manager and the go to guy and asked him what we could do today. Phil suggested us to take a ferry ride to Sausalito from Ferry Building. We decided to do that and started off towards Ferry Building. It was around 11:00 AM and Ferry Building is just 3 - 4 blocks away.

What started off as a sunny day quickly changed into a cloudy rainy day. We ran towards the booking counter to take 2 tickets to Sausalito. The ferry was to start at 2:30 PM and we had plenty of time to spare. We bought the tickets and went inside the Ferry Building to get some lunch. We went and bought 2 Veggie Sandwiches and ate them.

We had still time to spare so we started exploring ferry building and we landed at a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. I was little surprised to see this statue and happy at the same time. Both Usha and myself took photos in front of it happily.

After some time our ferry ride came and we started our journey to Sausalito.

It took around 30 minutes to reach Sausalito. Sausalito is a beautiful place which has nice small gift shops for visitors like us, Nice art museums and some good restaurants.

We reached Sausalito and started walking around and reached shore after walking much around :)

We just had an hour to look around the city before our next Ferry ride back to Downtown San Francisco.

We came back to San Francisco and took a cable car back home.

First Day in San Francisco

The day I landed in San Francisco was a sunny day and had nice breeze. Never expected it to be so cold as i am used to Bangalore weather in India which is like 7 - 8 Deg Celsius warmer than San Francisco. I landed in San Francisco Airport on 6th October 2010, An important day in my life as it was my first day in United States. Lucky i had a friend with me who was also visiting United States for the first time and another friend who was an US citizen and helped a lot in our journey.

We took a Taxi to my first Hotel in San Francisco called as "The Oasis Hotel" which is located in 900 Franklin Street.

When we reached Oasis Hotel it was almost 2 PM and we were tired from the long flight. We checked in our respective rooms, got ready and started off to 50 Fremont Street / Market Street by 4:30 PM where our Office was located.

Reached Office by 5 in Yellow Cab and saw two of my bosses (Jay and Uday) standing and talking business as usual. I walked up to them and greeted them and they took me upstairs (2nd floor where Meltwater tech office is located).

I met Karthik who greeted me with a big welcome and met Tristan and Roy for the very first time. Karthik then took us to Starbucks Coffee Shop near 50 Fremont and bought us Coffee ( I took Espresso ) and we had a small discussion on where our product was heading. After a while we went back to office packed our bags and went back to hotel in another Yellow Cab. There were lots of them and they are nothing like these Auto Drivers in India. They will take you to any destination you want but all you have to do is tip them.

Anyways Getting back to the point, We went back to hotel and it was dinner time (around 7:30 PM). While coming back we saw an Indian Resturant on Van Ness called "Naan & Curry". We had our dinner over there.

We ordered 2 Naan and Panner Butter Masala and 1 full plate of Vegetable Biriyani thinking that the portion of food will be just like what we have in India but obviously i was wrong. Naan was Huge and it was almost as big as a full sized Batura :D. We managed to eat what we could and left the place and went straight to bed. That was our first day in San Francisco and i was really excited to see such a huge change. Experience was too good to be true :) and thus began a wonderful journey.
